37 First Chronicles 23:1-32 1So when David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel.

2And he gathered together all the princes of Israel, with the priests and the Levites. 3Now the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years and upward: and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty and eight thousand. 4Of which, twenty and four thousand were to set forward the work of the house of the LORD; and six thousand were officers and judges: 5Moreover four thousand were porters; and four thousand praised the LORD with the instruments which I made, said David, to praise therewith. 6And David divided them into courses among the sons of Levi, namely, Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

7Of the Gershonites were, Laadan, and Shimei. 8The sons of Laadan; the chief was Jehiel, and Zetham, and Joel, three. 9The sons of Shimei; Shelomith, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the chief of the fathers of Laadan. 10And the sons of Shimei were, Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei. 11And Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah had not many sons; therefore they were in one reckoning, according to their fathers house.

12The sons of Kohath; Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four. 13The sons of Amram; Aaron and Moses: and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons for ever, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister unto him, and to bless in his name for ever. 14Now concerning Moses the man of God, his sons were named of the tribe of Levi. 15The sons of Moses were, Gershom, and Eliezer. 16Of the sons of Gershom, Shebuel was the chief. 17And the sons of Eliezer were, Rehabiah the chief. And Eliezer had none other sons; but the sons of Rehabiah were very many. 18Of the sons of Izhar; Shelomith the chief. 19Of the sons of Hebron; Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth. 20Of the sons of Uzziel; Micah the first, and Jesiah the second.

21The sons of Merari; Mahli, and Mushi. The sons of Mahli; Eleazar, and Kish. 22And Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters: and their brethren the sons of Kish took them. 23The sons of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three.

24These were the sons of Levi after the house of their fathers; even the chief of the fathers, as they were counted by number of names by their polls, that did the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from the age of twenty years and upward. 25For David said, The LORD God of Israel hath given rest unto his people, that they may dwell in Jerusalem for ever: 26And also unto the Levites; they shall no more carry the tabernacle, nor any vessels of it for the service thereof. 27For by the last words of David the Levites were numbered from twenty years old and above: 28Because their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the purifying of all holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God; 29Both for the shewbread, and for the fine flour for meat offering, and for the unleavened cakes, and for that which is baked in the pan, and for that which is fried, and for all manner of measure and size; 30And to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise at even; 31And to offer all burnt sacrifices unto the LORD in the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded unto them, continually before the LORD: 32And that they should keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the holy place, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren, in the service of the house of the LORD.(KJV)

37 First Chronicles 23:1-32 1WHEN David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel. 2And he gathered together all the elders of the priests and the Levites. 3Now the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years and upward; and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty-eight thousand. 4Of them David appointed overseers over the work of the house of the LORD, twenty-four men over every thousand workers; and judges and scribes, six men over each hundred workers 5To look after the building, to carry on their work, to oversee the resources and the work, and to give an accounting of wealth and the alms which they had distributed to the poor. 6And David appointed administrators and managers over the poor and needy, to provide and distribute to the poor; one person over each ten, and they lacked nothing. And David appointed them all in their courses according to the sons of Levi; namely, Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 7Of the Gershonites were Ladan and Shimei. 8The sons of Ladan: his first-born was Nahliel, and then Jotham and Joel, three. 9And the sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Haziel, and Aran, three. These were the chiefs of the fathers of Shimei. 10And the sons of Shimei were, Nahat, Zabda, Jeush, and Beriah. These were the four sons of Shimei 11And Nahat was his first-born, Zabda the second; but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons; therefore they were included in their father's family as one. 12The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four. 13The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses; and Aaron was chosen to minister in the Holy of Holies, he and his sons for ever, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister to him, and to bless in his name for ever. 14Now as for Moses the prophet of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi. 15The sons of Moses were Gershon and Eliezer. 16The son of Gershon was Samuel his first-born. 17And the son of Eliezer was Arhimah his first-born. And Eliezer had no other sons; but the son of Arhimah was Ribbi his first-born. 18And the son of Izhar was Shelomith his first-born. 19The sons of Hebron: Joda his first-born, Amariah the second, Nahzaiel the third, and Nakmaiel the fourth. 20The sons of Uzziel: Micah his first-born and Shoh the second. 21The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish. 22And Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters; and the sons of their uncle Kish took them for wives in marriage. 23The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth, three.

24¶ These were the sons of Levi after the house of their fathers, even the chiefs of the fathers, as they were counted by number of names by their polls, who were overseers over the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from the age of twenty years and upward. 25For David said, The LORD God of Israel has given rest to his people, and he dwells in Jerusalem for ever; 26And he also said to the Levites that they should carry the tabernacle and all the vessels for the service thereof. 27For by the last words of David the Levites were numbered from twenty years old and upward, 28Because he appointed them to the office to help the sons of Aaron to be overseers in the house of the LORD, over those who sound with straight and curved trumpets, and over the chambers in which the holy vessels of the LORD were stored; 29And over the shewbread and the fine flour for meal offering and the unleavened cakes and over all those who sing and offer thanks, 30And that they might arise every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise at evening, 31And to offer burnt offerings to the LORD on the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the days of set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded to them, continually before the LORD, 32And that they should have charge of the vessels of the tabernacle of the congregation and charge of the vessels of the sanctuary and charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren when they were needed to minister in the house of the LORD. 37 First Chronicles 23:1-32 1When David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel.

2David assembled all the leaders of Israel and the priests and the Levites. 3The Levites, thirty years old and upward, were numbered, and the total was thirty-eight thousand men. 4"Twenty-four thousand of these," David said, "shall have charge of the work in the house of the LORD, six thousand shall be officers and judges, 5four thousand gatekeepers, and four thousand shall offer praises to the LORD with the instruments which I have made for praise." 6And David organized them in divisions corresponding to the sons of Levi: Gershom, Kohath, and Merar'i.

7The sons of Gersham were Ladan and Shim'e-i. 8The sons of Ladan: Jehi'el the chief, and Zetham, and Jo'el, three. 9The sons of Shim'e-i: Shelo'moth, Ha'zi-el, and Haran, three. These were the heads of the fathers' houses of Ladan. 10And the sons of Shim'e-i: Jahath, Zina, and Je'ush, and Beri'ah. These four were the sons of Shim'e-i. 11Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second; but Je'ush and Beri'ah had not many sons, therefore they became a father's house in one reckoning.

12The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uz'ziel, four. 13The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron was set apart to consecrate the most holy things, that he and his sons for ever should burn incense before the LORD, and minister to him and pronounce blessings in his name for ever. 14But the sons of Moses the man of God were named among the tribe of Levi. 15The sons of Moses: Gershom and Elie'zer. 16The sons of Gershom: Sheb'uel the chief. 17The sons of Elie'zer: Rehabi'ah the chief; Elie'zer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabi'ah were very many. 18The sons of Izhar: Shelo'mith the chief. 19The sons of Hebron: Jeri'ah the chief, Amari'ah the second, Jaha'ziel the third, and Jekame'am the fourth. 20The sons of Uz'ziel: Micah the chief and Isshi'ah the second.

21The sons of Merar'i: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Elea'zar and Kish. 22Elea'zar died having no sons, but only daughters; their kinsmen, the sons of Kish, married them. 23The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jer'emoth, three.

24These were the sons of Levi by their fathers' houses, the heads of fathers' houses as they were registered according to the number of the names of the individuals from twenty years old and upward who were to do the work for the service of the house of the LORD. 25For David said, "The LORD, the God of Israel, has given peace to his people; and he dwells in Jerusalem for ever. 26And so the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the things for its service"-- 27for by the last words of David these were the number of the Levites from twenty years old and upward-- 28"but their duty shall be to assist the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the LORD, having the care of the courts and the chambers, the cleansing of all that is holy, and any work for the service of the house of God; 29to assist also with the showbread, the flour for the cereal offering, the wafers of unleavened bread, the baked offering, the offering mixed with oil, and all measures of quantity or size. 30And they shall stand every morning, thanking and praising the LORD, and likewise at evening, 31and whenever burnt offerings are offered to the LORD on sabbaths, new moons, and feast days, according to the number required of them, continually before the LORD. 32Thus they shall keep charge of the tent of meeting and the sanctuary, and shall attend the sons of Aaron, their brethren, for the service of the house of the LORD."(RSV)

37 First Chronicles 23:1-32 1When David was old and full of years, he made his son Solomon king over Israel.

2He also gathered together all the leaders of Israel, as well as the priests and Levites. 3The Levites thirty years old or more were counted, and the total number of men was thirty-eight thousand. 4David said, "Of these, twenty-four thousand are to supervise the work of the temple of the LORD and six thousand are to be officials and judges. 5Four thousand are to be gatekeepers and four thousand are to praise the LORD with the musical instruments I have provided for that purpose."

6David divided the Levites into groups corresponding to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari. 7Belonging to the Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei. 8The sons of Ladan: Jehiel the first, Zetham and Joel -- three in all. 9The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Haziel and Haran -- three in all. These were the heads of the families of Ladan. 10And the sons of Shimei: Jahath, Ziza, Jeush and Beriah. These were the sons of Shimei -- four in all. 11Jahath was the first and Ziza the second, but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons; so they were counted as one family with one assignment. 12The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel -- four in all. 13The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron was set apart, he and his descendants forever, to consecrate the most holy things, to offer sacrifices before the LORD, to minister before him and to pronounce blessings in his name forever. 14The sons of Moses the man of God were counted as part of the tribe of Levi. 15The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer. 16The descendants of Gershom: Shubael was the first. 17The descendants of Eliezer: Rehabiah was the first. Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very numerous. 18The sons of Izhar: Shelomith was the first. 19The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third and Jekameam the fourth. 20The sons of Uzziel: Micah the first and Isshiah the second. 21The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish. 22Eleazar died without having sons: he had only daughters. Their cousins, the sons of Kish, married them. 23The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder and Jerimoth -- three in all.

24These were the descendants of Levi by their families -- the heads of families as they were registered under their names and counted individually, that is, the workers twenty years old or more who served in the temple of the LORD. 25For David had said, "Since the LORD, the God of Israel, has granted rest to his people and has come to dwell in Jerusalem forever, 26the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the articles used in its service." 27According to the last instructions of David, the Levites were counted from those twenty years old or more.

28The duty of the Levites was to help Aaron's descendants in the service of the temple of the LORD: to be in charge of the courtyards, the side rooms, the purification of all sacred things and the performance of other duties at the house of God. 29They were in charge of the bread set out on the table, the flour for the grain offerings, the unleavened wafers, the baking and the mixing, and all measurements of quantity and size. 30They were also to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD. They were to do the same in the evening 31and whenever burnt offerings were presented to the LORD on Sabbaths and at New Moon festivals and at appointed feasts. They were to serve before the LORD regularly in the proper number and in the way prescribed for them.

32And so the Levites carried out their responsibilities for the Tent of Meeting, for the Holy Place and, under their brothers the descendants of Aaron, for the service of the temple of the LORD.(NIV)

37 First Chronicles 23:1-32 1Now David was old and full of days; and he made Solomon his son king over Israel. 2He gathered together all the princes of Israel, with the priests and the Levites. 3The Levites were numbered from thirty years old and upward: and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty-eight thousand. 4Of these, twenty-four thousand were to oversee the work of the house of Yahweh; and six thousand were officers and judges; 5and four thousand were doorkeepers; and four thousand praised Yahweh with the instruments which I made, said David, for giving praise. 6David divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 7Of the Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei. 8The sons of Ladan: Jehiel the chief, and Zetham, and Joel, three. 9The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the heads of the fathers' houses of Ladan. 10The sons of Shimei: Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei. 11Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah didn't have many sons; therefore they became a fathers' house in one reckoning. 12The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four. 13The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses; and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons, forever, to burn incense before Yahweh, to minister to him, and to bless in his name, forever. 14But as for Moses the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi. 15The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer. 16The sons of Gershom: Shebuel the chief. 17The sons of Eliezer were: Rehabiah the chief; and Eliezer had no other sons; but the sons of Rehabiah were very many. 18The sons of Izhar: Shelomith the chief. 19The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the chief, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth. 20The sons of Uzziel: Micah the chief, and Isshiah the second. 21The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. 37 First Chronicles 23:1-32 1WHEN David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel.

2And he gathered together all the elders of the priests and the Levites. 3Now the Levites were numbered from the age of 30 years and upward; and their number by their polls, man by man, was 38,000. 4Of them David appointed overseers over the work of the house of Yahvah, 24 men over every 1,000 workers; and judges and scribes, 6 men over each 100 workers 5To look after the building, to carry on their work, to oversee the resources and the work, and to give an accounting of wealth and the alms which they had distributed to the poor. 6And David appointed administrators and managers over the poor and needy, to provide and distribute to the poor; one person over each 10, and they lacked nothing. And David appointed them all in their courses according to the sons of Levi; namely, Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

7Of the Gershonites were Ladan and Shimei. 8The sons of Ladan: his firstborn was Nahliel, and then Jotham and Joel, 3. 9And the sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Haziel, and Aran, 3. These were the chiefs of the fathers of Shimei. 10And the sons of Shimei were, Nahat, Zabda, Jeush, and Beriah. These were the 4 sons of Shimei 11And Nahat was his firstborn, Zabda the 2nd; but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons; therefore they were included in their father's family as one. 12The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, 4. 13The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses; and Aaron was chosen to minister in the Holy of Holies, he and his sons forever, to burn incense before Yahvah, to minister to him, and to bless in his name forever. 14Now as for Moses the prophet of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi. 15The sons of Moses were Gershon and Eliezer. 16The son of Gershon was Samuel his firstborn. 17And the son of Eliezer was Arhimah his firstborn. And Eliezer had no other sons; but the son of Arhimah was Ribbi his firstborn. 18And the son of Izhar was Shelomith his firstborn. 19The sons of Hebron: Joda his firstborn, Amariah the 2nd, Nahzaiel the 3rd, and Nakmaiel the 4th. 20The sons of Uzziel: Micah his firstborn and Shoh the 2nd.

21The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish. 22And Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters; and the sons of their uncle Kish took them for wives in marriage. 23The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth, 3.

24These were the sons of Levi after the house of their fathers, even the chiefs of the fathers, as they were counted by number of names by their polls, who were overseers over the work for the service of the house of Yahvah, from the age of 20 years and upward. 25For David said, Yahvah God of Israel has given rest to his people, and he lives in Jerusalem forever; 26And he also said to the Levites that they should carry the tabernacle and all the vessels for its service. 27For by the last words of David the Levites were numbered from 20 years old and upward, 28Because he appointed them to the office to help the sons of Aaron to be overseers in the house of Yahvah, over those who sound with straight and curved trumpets, and over the chambers in which the holy vessels of Yahvah were stored; 29And over the shewbread and the fine flour for meal offering and the unleavened cakes and over all those who sing and offer thanks, 30And that they might arise every morning to thank and praise Yahvah, and likewise at evening, 31And to offer burnt offerings to Yahvah on the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the days of set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded to them, continually before Yahvah, 32And that they should have charge of the vessels of the tabernacle of the congregation and charge of the vessels of the sanctuary and charge of the sons of Aaron their brothers when they were needed to minister in the house of Yahvah.
