13 Isaiah 40:1-31 1Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. 2Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORDS hand double for all her sins.

3The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: 5And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it. 6The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: 7The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. 8The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

9O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God! 10Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. 11He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

12Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance? 13Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counsellor hath taught him? 14With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding? 15Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing. 16And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offering. 17All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity.

18To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him? 19The workman melteth a graven image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold, and casteth silver chains. 20He that is so impoverished that he hath no oblation chooseth a tree that will not rot; he seeketh unto him a cunning workman to prepare a graven image, that shall not be moved. 21Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in: 23That bringeth the princes to nothing; he maketh the judges of the earth as vanity. 24Yea, they shall not be planted; yea, they shall not be sown: yea, their stock shall not take root in the earth: and he shall also blow upon them, and they shall wither, and the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble. 25To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One. 26Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth. 27Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God?

28Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. 29He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. 30Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: 31But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.(KJV)

13 Isaiah 40:1-31 1COMFORT ye, comfort ye my people, says your God. 2Speak comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry to her, for she was filled with violence and delighted in sin; and she has received from the LORD'S hand double punishment for all her sins.

3¶ The voice of him that cries in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4Every valley shall be filled up, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the steep place shall be made straight, and the rough places smooth; 5And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it. 6The voice says, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field; 7The grass withers, the flower fades, because the breath of the LORD blows upon it; surely this people is like the grass. 8The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

9¶ O Zion, that brings good tidings, get you up upon the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that brings good tidings, lift up your voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say to the cities of Judah, Behold your God! 10Behold, the LORD God will come with might, and his arm with strength; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. 11He shall feed his flock like a shepherd; he shall gather the lambs with his arm and carry them in his bosom, and shall feed again those who give suck.

12¶ Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and meted out heaven with a span and gathered the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? 13Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD or who has been to him a counsellor? 14With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him and made him to understand the path of justice and taught him knowledge and showed him the way of understanding? 15Behold, the nations are like a drop out of a bucket, and are counted as the dipping of the balance; behold, the isles shall be cast away like fine dust. 16And Lebanon is not sufficient for the fuel, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offering. 17All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him for destruction and the sword.

18¶ To whom then will you liken God? Or to what likeness will you compare him? 19Is he an image which the carpenter has made and the goldsmith has overlaid with gold and fastened with silver chains? 20He selects wood that is not worm-eaten; then chooses a carpenter, who fashions it with his skill, to make an image that will not be moved. 21Have you not heard? Have you not known? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22It is he who sits upon the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens as a curtain and spreads them as a tent to dwell in; 23Who brings princes to nought; and makes the judges of the earth as if they were nothing. 24Yea, they shall not be planted; yea, they shall not be sown; yea, their stock shall not take root in the earth; and he shall blow upon them and they shall wither, and the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble. 25To whom then will you liken me, or to whom shall I be equal? says the Holy One. 26Lift up your eyes on high, and behold: who has created these things? Who brings out their host by number; he called them all by name, by the greatness of his glory and the strength of his power; not one is missing.

27¶ Why do you say, O Jacob, and say, O Israel, My way is hidden from the LORD and justice is not rendered by my God? 28Have you not known, have you not heard, that God is the LORD for ever, who has created the ends of the earth? that he does not faint, neither is weary? and that there is no searching of his understanding? 29He gives power to the weary, and to them that are stricken with disease he increases strength. 30Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall helplessly stumble; 31But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall grow wings as a dove; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint. (LAM)

13 Isaiah 40:1-31 1Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. 2Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins.

3A voice cries: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. 5And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken."

6A voice says, "Cry!" And I said, "What shall I cry?" All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. 7The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the LORD blows upon it; surely the people is grass. 8The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever.

9Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, "Behold your God!" 10Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. 11He will feed his flock like a shepherd, he will gather the lambs in his arms, he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.

12Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? 13Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, or as his counselor has instructed him? 14Whom did he consult for his enlightenment, and who taught him the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and showed him the way of understanding? 15Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are accounted as the dust on the scales; behold, he takes up the isles like fine dust. 16Lebanon would not suffice for fuel, nor are its beasts enough for a burnt offering. 17All the nations are as nothing before him, they are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness.

18To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with him? 19The idol! a workman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold, and casts for it silver chains. 20He who is impoverished chooses for an offering wood that will not rot; he seeks out a skilful craftsman to set up an image that will not move.

21Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in; 23who brings princes to nought, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing.

24Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble.

25To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One. 26Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name; by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing.

27Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, "My way is hid from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God"? 28Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary, his understanding is unsearchable. 29He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. 30Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; 31but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.(RSV)

13 Isaiah 40:1-31 1Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. 2Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins. 3A voice of one calling: "In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God. 4Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. 5And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken." 6A voice says, "Cry out." And I said, "What shall I cry?" "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field. 7The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the LORD blows on them. Surely the people are grass. 8The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever." 9You who bring good tidings to Zion, go up on a high mountain. You who bring good tidings to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the towns of Judah, "Here is your God!" 10See, the Sovereign LORD comes with power, and his arm rules for him. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him. 11He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. 12Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance? 13Who has understood the mind of the LORD, or instructed him as his counselor? 14Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge or showed him the path of understanding? 15Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust. 16Lebanon is not sufficient for altar fires, nor its animals enough for burnt offerings. 17Before him all the nations are as nothing; they are regarded by him as worthless and less than nothing. 18To whom, then, will you compare God? What image will you compare him to? 19As for an idol, a craftsman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and fashions silver chains for it. 20A man too poor to present such an offering selects wood that will not rot. He looks for a skilled craftsman to set up an idol that will not topple. 21Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? 22He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. 23He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. 24No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff. 25"To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?" says the Holy One. 26Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. 27Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, "My way is hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God"? 28Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.(NIV)

3The voice of one who calls out,
'Prepare the way of the LORD in the wilderness!
Make a level highway in the desert for our God.

4Every valley shall be exalted,
and every mountain and hill shall be made low.
The uneven shall be made level,
and the rough places a plain.

5The glory of the LORD shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together;
for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it.' 6The voice of one saying, 'Cry!'
One said, 'What shall I cry?'

'All flesh is like grass,
and all its glory is like the flower of the field.

7The grass withers,
the flower fades,
because the LORD's breath blows on it.
Surely the people are like grass.

8The grass withers,
the flower fades;
but the word of our God stands forever.'

9You who tell good news to Zion, go up on a high mountain.
You who tell good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with strength.
Lift it up. Don't be afraid.
Say to the cities of Judah, 'Behold, your God!'

10Behold, the Lord GOD will come as a mighty one,
and his arm will rule for him.
Behold, his reward is with him,
and his recompense before him.

11He will feed his flock like a shepherd.
He will gather the lambs in his arm,
and carry them in his bosom.
He will gently lead those who have their young.

12Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand,
and marked off the sky with his span,
and calculated the dust of the earth in a measure,
and weighed the mountains in scales,
and the hills in a balance?

13Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD,
or has taught him as his counselor?

14Who did he take counsel with,
and who instructed him,
and taught him in the path of justice,
and taught him knowledge,
and showed him the way of understanding?

15Behold, the nations are like a drop in a bucket,
and are regarded as a speck of dust on a balance.
Behold, he lifts up the islands like a very little thing.

16Lebanon is not sufficient to burn,
nor its animals sufficient for a burnt offering.

17All the nations are like nothing before him.
They are regarded by him as less than nothing, and vanity.

18To whom then will you liken God?
Or what likeness will you compare to him?

19A workman has cast an image,
and the goldsmith overlays it with gold,
and casts silver chains for it.

20He who is too impoverished for such an offering chooses a tree that will not rot.
He seeks a skillful workman to set up an engraved image for him that will not be moved.

21Haven't you known?
Haven't you heard, yet?
Haven't you been told from the beginning?
Haven't you understood from the foundations of the earth?

22It is he who sits above the circle of the earth,
and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers;
who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,
and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in;
23who brings princes to nothing;
who makes the judges of the earth like meaningless.

24They are planted scarcely.
They are sown scarcely.
Their stock has scarcely taken root in the ground.
He merely blows on them, and they wither,
and the whirlwind takes them away as stubble.

25'To whom then will you liken me?
Who is my equal?' says the Holy One.

26Lift up your eyes on high,
and see who has created these,
who brings out their army by number.
He calls them all by name.
by the greatness of his might,
and because he is strong in power,
Not one is lacking.

27Why do you say, Jacob,
and speak, Israel,
'My way is hidden from the LORD,
and the justice due me is disregarded by my God?'

28Haven't you known?
Haven't you heard?
The everlasting God, the LORD,
The Creator of the ends of the earth, doesn't faint.
He isn't weary.
His understanding is unsearchable.

29He gives power to the weak.
He increases the strength of him who has no might.

30Even the youths faint and get weary,
and the young men utterly fall;
31But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength.
They will mount up with wings like eagles.
They will run, and not be weary.
They will walk, and not faint.(WEB/HNV)

13 Isaiah 40:1-31 1COMFORT, comfort my people, says your God. 2Speak comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry to her, for she was filled with violence and delighted in sin; and she has received from Yahvah's hand double punishment for all her sins.

3The voice of him who cries in the wilderness, Prepare the way of Yahvah, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4Every valley will be filled up, and every mountain and hill will be made low; and the steep place will be made straight, and the rough places smooth; 5And the glory of Yahvah will be revealed, and all flesh will see it together; for the mouth of Yahvah has spoken it. 6The voice says, Cry. And he said, What will I cry? All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field; 7The grass withers, the flower fades, because the breath of Yahvah blows on it; surely this people is like the grass. 8The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever.

9Oh Zion, that brings good news, get up on the high mountain; oh Jerusalem, that brings good news, lift up your voice with strength; lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the cities of Judah, Look your God. 10Look, Yahvah God will come with might, and his arm with strength; look, his reward is with him, and his work before him. 11He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs with his arm and carry them in his embrace, and will feed again those who nurse.

12Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and meted out heaven with a span and gathered the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? 13Who has directed the Spirit of Yahvah or who has been to him a counsellor? 14With whom he took counsel, and who instructed him and made him understand the path of justice and taught him knowledge and showed him the way of understanding? 15Look, the nations are like a drop out of a bucket, and are counted as the dipping of the balance; look, the isles will be cast away like fine dust. 16And Lebanon is not sufficient for the fuel, nor its animals sufficient for a burnt offering. 17All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him for destruction and the sword.

18To whom then will you liken God? Or to what likeness will you compare him? 19Is he an image which the carpenter has made and the goldsmith has overlaid with gold and fastened with silver chains? 20He selects wood that is not worm-eaten; then chooses a carpenter, who fashions it with his skill, to make an image that will not be moved. 21Have you not heard? Have you not known? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22It is he who sits on the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens as a curtain and spreads them as a tent to live in; 23Who brings princes to nothing; and makes the judges of the earth as if they were nothing. 24Yes, they will not be planted; yes, they will not be sown; yes, their stock will not take root in the earth; and he will blow on them and they will wither, and the whirlwind will take them away as stubble. 25To whom then will you liken me, or to whom will I be equal? Says the Holy One. 26Lift up your eyes on high, and look: who has created these things? Who brings out their host by number; he called them all by name, by the greatness of his glory and the strength of his power; not one is missing.

27Why do you say, Oh Jacob, and say, Oh Israel, My way is hidden from Yahvah and justice is not rendered by my God? 28Have you not known, have you not heard, that God is Yahvah forever? Who has created the ends of the earth, that he does not faint, nor does he weary, and that there is no searching his understanding? 29He gives power to the weary, and to those who are struck with disease he increases strength. 30Even the youths will faint and be weary, and the young men will helplessly stumble; 31But they who wait for Yahvah will renew their strength; they will grow wings as a dove; they will run and not be weary; and they will walk and not faint.
