   1Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.
2And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
3And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.
4And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.
5And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.
6And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.
7Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;
8And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.
9And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.
 10And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.
11And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.
12And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.
13But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.
14For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.
15And they did so, and made them all sit down.
16Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.
17And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.
 18And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?
19They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.
20He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.
21And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;
22Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
23And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
24For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
25For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
26For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Fathers, and of the holy angels.
27But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
 28And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
29And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.
30And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
31Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
32But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.
33And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
34While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
35And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
36And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
 37And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.
38And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.
39And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.
40And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.
41And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.
42And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
 43And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,
44Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
45But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.
46Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.
47And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,
48And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
49And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
50And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
 51And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
52And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.
53And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
54And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
55But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
56For the Son of man is not come to destroy mens lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
 57And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
58And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
59And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
60Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
61And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
62And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.(KJV)

38And behold, a man from the multitude cried, saying, Teacher, I beseech thee to look upon my son; for he is mine only child:
39and behold, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth, and it hardly departeth from him, bruising him sorely.
40And I besought thy disciples to cast it out; and they could not.
41And Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and bear with you? bring hither thy son.
42And as he was yet a coming, the demon dashed him down, and tare him grievously. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
43And they were all astonished at the majesty of God. But while all were marvelling at all the things which he did, he said unto his disciples,
44Let these words sink into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered up into the hands of men.
45But they understood not this saying, and it was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
46And there arose a reasoning among them, which of them was the greatest.
47But when Jesus saw the reasoning of their heart, he took a little child, and set him by his side,
48and said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this little child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same is great.
49And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out demons in thy name; and we forbade him, because he followeth not with us.
50But Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against you is for you.

58And Jesus said unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the heaven have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
59And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
60But he said unto him, Leave the dead to bury their own dead; but go thou and publish abroad the kingdom of God.
61And another also said, I will follow thee, Lord; but first suffer me to bid farewell to them that are at my house.

11When the people found it out, they went after him; and he received them, and spoke to them concerning the kingdom of God, and he healed those who were in need of healing.
12And when the day began to wane, his disciples came up and said to him, Dismiss the people, that they may go to the villages around us and to the farms, to lodge there and find food for themselves, because we are in a lonely place.
13Jesus said to them, You give them to eat. But they said, We do not have more than five loaves of bread and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all this people;
14For there were about five thousand men. Jesus said to them, Make them sit down in groups, fifty men in each group.
15The disciples did so, making them all sit down.
16And Jesus took the five loaves of bread and the two fish, and looked up to heaven and blessed them, and broke and gave them to his disciples to set before the people.
17And they all ate and were filled; and they took up fragments of what was left over, twelve baskets.
18¶ As he prayed by himself, his disciples were with him; then he asked them and said, What do the people say concerning me that I am?
19They answered and said to him, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and others that one of the old prophets has risen.
20He said to them, But you, who do you say that I am? Simon answered and said, The Messiah (the anointed one of God).
21But he cautioned them, and warned them not to say this to anyone.
22And he said to them, The Son of man must suffer a great many things, and he will be rejected by the elders and the high priests and the scribes, and they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise.
23Then he said in the presence of everyone, He who wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross every day and follow me.
24For he who wishes to save his life shall lose it; but he who loses his life for my sake shall save it.
25For how can a man be benefited, if he gain the whole world, but lose his own soul, or even weakens it?
26For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of man will be ashamed of him when he comes with the glory of his Father accompanied by his holy angels.
27I tell you the truth, that there are men who stand here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.
28¶ And it came to pass about eight days after these words, Jesus took Simon and James and John, and went up into a mountain to pray.
29And while he prayed, the appearance of his face was changed and his clothes became white and dazzling.
30And behold, two men were speaking with him, Moses and Elijah,
31Who appeared in glory and spoke concerning his departure which was to end at Jerusalem.
32And Simon and those who were with him were heavy with sleep; and when they awoke they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him.
33And when they began to leave him, Simon said to Jesus, Teacher, it is better for us to remain here; and let us make three shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah; but he did not know what he was saying.
34And when he had said these things, there came a cloud and overshadowed them; and they were frightened when they saw Moses and Elijah enter into the cloud.
35And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son; hear him.
36And when the voice was heard, they found Jesus alone. And they kept silent, and in those days they did not tell any man what they saw.
37¶ And it came to pass the next day, as they came down from the mountain, they were met by many people.
38And one of the men of that crowd cried out and said, O Teacher, I beg you to have mercy on me. I have an only son,
39And a spirit seizes him and he suddenly cries out and gnashes his teeth and foams; and it hardly leaves him when it has tormented him.
40And I besought your disciples to cast it out; and they could not.
41Jesus answered, saying, O crooked and faithless generation, how long will I be with you and preach to you? Bring your son here.
42And as he brought him, the demon attacked him and convulsed him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy and gave him to his father.
43¶ And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. And while every man wondered at everything which Jesus did, he said to his disciples,
44Treasure these words in your ears; for the Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men.
45But they did not understand this word, because it was hidden from them so that they might not know it; and they were afraid to ask him concerning this word.
46Then a reasoning entered into their minds as to who was the greatest among them.
47But Jesus knew the reasoning of their hearts, and he took a boy and made him stand by him.
48And he said to them, Everyone who receives a little child like this one in my name, receives me; and he who receives me receives him who sent me; for whoever is least among you, let him be great.
49And John answered, saying, Teacher, we saw a man casting cut demons in your name; and we forbad him, because he did not come with us as your follower.
50Jesus said to them, Do not forbid; for he who is not against you is for you.
51¶ And it happened when the days to go up on his journey were fulfilled, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.
52So he sent messengers ahead of him; and they went away and entered into a Samaritan village to prepare for him.
53But they did not receive him, because his face was set to go straight to Jerusalem.
54When his disciples James and John saw it, they said to him, Our Lord, would you be willing that we command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?
55He turned and rebuked them, saying, You do not know of what spirit you are.
56For the Son of man did not come to destroy lives, but to save. And they went to another village.
57¶ And while they were on the journey, a man said to him, My Lord, I will follow you wherever you go.
58Jesus said to him, Foxes have holes, and the birds of the air a shelter; but the Son of man has no place even to lay his head.
59He said to another, Follow me; but he said to him, My Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.
60Jesus said to him, Let the dead bury their own dead; but you go and preach the kingdom of God.
61Another one said to him, I will follow you, my Lord; but permit me first to entrust my household to some one, and then come.
62Jesus said to him, No man who puts his hand on the plough handle and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.

7Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead,
8by some that Eli'jah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen.
9Herod said, "John I beheaded; but who is this about whom I hear such things?" And he sought to see him.
10On their return the apostles told him what they had done. And he took them and withdrew apart to a city called Beth-sa'ida.
11When the crowds learned it, they followed him; and he welcomed them and spoke to them of the kingdom of God, and cured those who had need of healing.
12Now the day began to wear away; and the twelve came and said to him, "Send the crowd away, to go into the villages and country round about, to lodge and get provisions; for we are here in a lonely place."
13But he said to them, "You give them something to eat." They said, "We have no more than five loaves and two fish--unless we are to go and buy food for all these people."
14For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, "Make them sit down in companies, about fifty each."
15And they did so, and made them all sit down.
16And taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.
17And all ate and were satisfied. And they took up what was left over, twelve baskets of broken pieces.
18Now it happened that as he was praying alone the disciples were with him; and he asked them, "Who do the people say that I am?"
19And they answered, "John the Baptist; but others say, Eli'jah; and others, that one of the old prophets has risen."
20And he said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" And Peter answered, "The Christ of God."
21But he charged and commanded them to tell this to no one,
22saying, "The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised."
23And he said to all, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
24For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake, he will save it.
25For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?
26For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
27But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God."
28Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray.
29And as he was praying, the appearance of his countenance was altered, and his raiment became dazzling white.
30And behold, two men talked with him, Moses and Eli'jah,
31who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was to accomplish at Jerusalem.
32Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, and when they wakened they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him.
33And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is well that we are here; let us make three booths, one for you and one for Moses and one for Eli'jah"--not knowing what he said.
34As he said this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
35And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!"
36And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silence and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.
37On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him.
38And behold, a man from the crowd cried, "Teacher, I beg you to look upon my son, for he is my only child;
39and behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out; it convulses him till he foams, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him.
40And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not."
41Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here."
42While he was coming, the demon tore him and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
43And all were astonished at the majesty of God. But while they were all marveling at everything he did, he said to his disciples,
44"Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men."
45But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
46And an argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest.
47But when Jesus perceived the thought of their hearts, he took a child and put him by his side,
48and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me; for he who is least among you all is the one who is great."
49John answered, "Master, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he does not follow with us."
50But Jesus said to him, "Do not forbid him; for he that is not against you is for you."
51When the days drew near for him to be received up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.
52And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him;
53but the people would not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem.
54And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, "Lord, do you want us to bid fire come down from heaven and consume them?"
55But he turned and rebuked them.
56And they went on to another village.
57As they were going along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."
58And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head."
59To another he said, "Follow me." But he said, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father."
60But he said to him, "Leave the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
61Another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home."
62Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."(RSV)
43 Luke 9:1-62
1When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases,
2and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
3He told them: "Take nothing for the journey -- no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic.
4Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town.
5If people do not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town, as a testimony against them."
6So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.
7Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed, because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead,
8others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life.
9But Herod said, "I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?" And he tried to see him.
10When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida,

12Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, "Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here."
13He replied, "You give them something to eat." They answered, "We have only five loaves of bread and two fish -- unless we go and buy food for all this crowd."
14(About five thousand men were there.) But he said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each."
15The disciples did so, and everybody sat down.
16Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to set before the people.
17They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
18Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?"
19They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life."
20"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "The Christ of God."
21Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.
22And he said, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life."
23Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.
25What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?
26If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
27I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God."
28About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.
29As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.
30Two men, Moses and Elijah,
31appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.
32Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.
33As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters -- one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." (He did not know what he was saying.)
34While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
35A voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him."
36When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves, and told no one at that time what they had seen.
37The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him.
38A man in the crowd called out, "Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child.
39A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him.
40I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not."
41"O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here."
42Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the evil spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father.
43And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples,
44"Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men."
45But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
46An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.
47Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him.
48Then he said to them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For he who is least among you all -- he is the greatest."
49"Master," said John, "we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us."
50"Do not stop him," Jesus said, "for whoever is not against you is for you."
51As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.
52And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him;
53but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem.
54When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?"
55But Jesus turned and rebuked them,
56and they went to another village.
57As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."
58Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."
59He said to another man, "Follow me." But the man replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."
60Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
61Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good-by to my family."
