1 Genesis 20:1-18 ¹וַיִּסַּ֨ע מִשָּׁ֤ם אַבְרָהָם֙ אַ֣רְצָה הַנֶּ֔גֶב וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב בֵּין־ קָדֵ֖שׁ וּבֵ֣ין שׁ֑וּר וַיָּ֖גָר בִּגְרָֽר׃ ²וַיֹּ֧אמֶר אַבְרָהָ֛ם אֶל־ שָׂרָ֥ה אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ אֲחֹ֣תִי הִ֑וא וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח אֲבִימֶ֙לֶךְ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ גְּרָ֔ר וַיִּקַּ֖ח אֶת־ שָׂרָֽה׃ ³וַיָּבֹ֧א אֱלֹהִ֛ים אֶל־ אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ בַּחֲל֣וֹם הַלָּ֑יְלָה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֗וֹ הִנְּךָ֥ מֵת֙ עַל־ הָאִשָּׁ֣ה אֲשֶׁר־ לָקַ֔חְתָּ וְהִ֖וא בְּעֻ֥לַת בָּֽעַל׃ ⁴וַאֲבִימֶ֕לֶךְ לֹ֥א קָרַ֖ב אֵלֶ֑יהָ וַיֹּאמַ֕ר אֲדֹנָ֕י הֲג֥וֹי גַּם־ צַדִּ֖יק תַּהֲרֹֽג׃ ⁵הֲלֹ֨א ה֤וּא אָֽמַר־ לִי֙ אֲחֹ֣תִי הִ֔וא וְהִֽיא־ גַם־ הִ֥וא אָֽמְרָ֖ה אָחִ֣י ה֑וּא בְּתָם־ לְבָבִ֛י וּבְנִקְיֹ֥ן כַּפַּ֖י עָשִׂ֥יתִי זֹֽאת׃ ⁶וַיֹּאמֶר֩ אֵלָ֨יו הָֽאֱלֹהִ֜ים בַּחֲלֹ֗ם גַּ֣ם אָנֹכִ֤י יָדַ֙עְתִּי֙ כִּ֤י בְתָם־ לְבָבְךָ֙ עָשִׂ֣יתָ זֹּ֔את וָאֶחְשֹׂ֧ךְ גַּם־ אָנֹכִ֛י אֽוֹתְךָ֖ מֵחֲטוֹ־ לִ֑י עַל־ כֵּ֥ן לֹא־ נְתַתִּ֖יךָ לִנְגֹּ֥עַ אֵלֶֽיהָ׃ ⁷וְעַתָּ֗ה הָשֵׁ֤ב אֵֽשֶׁת־ הָאִישׁ֙ כִּֽי־ נָבִ֣יא ה֔וּא וְיִתְפַּלֵּ֥ל בַּֽעַדְךָ֖ וֶֽחְיֵ֑ה וְאִם־ אֵֽינְךָ֣ מֵשִׁ֗יב דַּ֚ע כִּי־ מ֣וֹת תָּמ֔וּת אַתָּ֖ה וְכָל־ אֲשֶׁר־ לָֽךְ׃ ⁸וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ בַּבֹּ֗קֶר וַיִּקְרָא֙ לְכָל־ עֲבָדָ֔יו וַיְדַבֵּ֛ר אֶת־ כָּל־ הַדְּבָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה בְּאָזְנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיִּֽירְא֥וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים מְאֹֽד׃ ⁹וַיִּקְרָ֨א אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ לְאַבְרָהָ֗ם וַיֹּ֨אמֶר ל֜וֹ מֶֽה־ עָשִׂ֤יתָ לָּ֙נוּ֙ וּמֶֽה־ חָטָ֣אתִי לָ֔ךְ כִּֽי־ הֵבֵ֧אתָ עָלַ֛י וְעַל־ מַמְלַכְתִּ֖י חֲטָאָ֣ה גְדֹלָ֑ה מַעֲשִׂים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹא־ יֵֽעָשׂ֔וּ עָשִׂ֖יתָ עִמָּדִֽי׃ ¹⁰וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ אֶל־ אַבְרָהָ֑ם מָ֣ה רָאִ֔יתָ כִּ֥י עָשִׂ֖יתָ אֶת־ הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּֽה׃ ¹¹וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם כִּ֣י אָמַ֗רְתִּי רַ֚ק אֵין־ יִרְאַ֣ת אֱלֹהִ֔ים בַּמָּק֖וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה וַהֲרָג֖וּנִי עַל־ דְּבַ֥ר אִשְׁתִּֽי׃ ¹²וְגַם־ אָמְנָ֗ה אֲחֹתִ֤י בַת־ אָבִי֙ הִ֔וא אַ֖ךְ לֹ֣א בַת־ אִמִּ֑י וַתְּהִי־ לִ֖י לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ ¹³וַיְהִ֞י כַּאֲשֶׁ֧ר הִתְע֣וּ אֹתִ֗י אֱלֹהִים֮ מִבֵּ֣ית אָבִי֒ וָאֹמַ֣ר לָ֔הּ זֶ֣ה חַסְדֵּ֔ךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר תַּעֲשִׂ֖י עִמָּדִ֑י אֶ֤ל כָּל־ הַמָּקוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָב֣וֹא שָׁ֔מָּה אִמְרִי־ לִ֖י אָחִ֥י הֽוּא׃ ¹⁴וַיִּקַּ֨ח אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ צֹ֣אן וּבָקָ֗ר וַעֲבָדִים֙ וּשְׁפָחֹ֔ת וַיִּתֵּ֖ן לְאַבְרָהָ֑ם וַיָּ֣שֶׁב ל֔וֹ אֵ֖ת שָׂרָ֥ה אִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃ ¹⁵וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ הִנֵּ֥ה אַרְצִ֖י לְפָנֶ֑יךָ בַּטּ֥וֹב בְּעֵינֶ֖יךָ שֵֽׁב׃ ¹⁶וּלְשָׂרָ֣ה אָמַ֗ר הִנֵּ֨ה נָתַ֜תִּי אֶ֤לֶף כֶּ֙סֶף֙ לְאָחִ֔יךְ הִנֵּ֤ה הוּא־ לָךְ֙ כְּס֣וּת עֵינַ֔יִם לְכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתָּ֑ךְ וְאֵ֥ת כֹּ֖ל וְנֹכָֽחַת׃ ¹⁷וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל אַבְרָהָ֖ם אֶל־ הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וַיִּרְפָּ֨א אֱלֹהִ֜ים אֶת־ אֲבִימֶ֧לֶךְ וְאֶת־ אִשְׁתּ֛וֹ וְאַמְהֹתָ֖יו וַיֵּלֵֽדוּ׃ ¹⁸כִּֽי־ עָצֹ֤ר עָצַר֙ יְהוָ֔ה בְּעַ֥ד כָּל־ רֶ֖חֶם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ עַל־ דְּבַ֥ר שָׂרָ֖ה אֵ֥שֶׁת אַבְרָהָֽם׃ (WLC)

1 Genesis 20:1

1 Genesis 20:1-18 ¹And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar. ²And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah. ³But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a mans wife. ⁴But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation? ⁵Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this. ⁶And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her. ⁷Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine. ⁸Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid. ⁹Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done. ¹⁰And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing? ¹¹And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wifes sake. ¹²And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. ¹³And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my fathers house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother. ¹⁴And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife. ¹⁵And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee. ¹⁶And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved.

¹⁷So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children. ¹⁸For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abrahams wife.(KJV)

³¶ But God came to Abimeleck in a dream by night and said to him, Behold, you will die on account of the woman whom you have taken; for she is another man's wife. ⁴But Abimeleck had not touched her; and he said, O LORD, wilt thou slay an innocent people? ⁵Behold, he said, She is my sister; and she herself also said, He is my brother; in the innocence of my heart and purity of my hands have I done this. ⁶And God said to him in a dream, Yea, I know that you have done this in the innocence of your heart; for I also restrained you from sinning against me; therefore I did not permit you to touch her. ⁷Now therefore restore the man's wife, for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for you, and you shall live; but if you do not restore her, then know that you will surely die, you, and all your family.

⁸¶ Therefore Abimeleck rose early in the morning and called all of his servants and told them all these words; and the men were exceedingly afraid. ⁹Then Abimeleck called Abraham and said to him, What have I done to you? and what crime have I committed against you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom such a great sin? You have done to me things that ought not to be done. ¹⁰And Abimeleck said to Abraham, What induced you to do this thing? ¹¹And Abraham said, Because I thought, perhaps there is no fear of God in this country; and they will slay me for my wife's sake. ¹²And yet truly she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. ¹³And it came to pass when God brought me forth out of my father's house, I said to her, This is the favor which you shall do to me; at every place whither we shall go, say of me, He is my brother.

¹⁴¶ And Abimeleck took sheep and oxen and male and female servants and gave them to Abraham and restored to him Sarah his wife. ¹⁵Then Abimeleck said to Abraham, Behold, my land is before you; dwell wherever you please. ¹⁶And to Sarah he said, Behold, I have given a thousand pieces of silver to your brother; behold, it is given for you, because you have been humbled in the eyes of my people, and because of the other things for which I have reproved you. ¹⁷So Abraham prayed to God and God healed Abimeleck and his wife and his maidservants, and they bore children. ¹⁸For the LORD had fast closed up the wombs of all women in the household of Abimeleck because of Sarah, Abraham's wife. And Abim'elech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah. ³But God came to Abim'elech in a dream by night, and said to him, "Behold, you are a dead man, because of the woman whom you have taken; for she is a man's wife." ⁴Now Abim'elech had not approached her; so he said, "Lord, wilt thou slay an innocent people? ⁵Did he not himself say to me, `She is my sister'? And she herself said, `He is my brother.' In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands I have done this." ⁶Then God said to him in the dream, "Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart, and it was I who kept you from sinning against me; therefore I did not let you touch her. ⁷Now then restore the man's wife; for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you shall live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die, you, and all that are yours."

⁸So Abim'elech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told them all these things; and the men were very much afraid. ⁹Then Abim'elech called Abraham, and said to him, "What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and my kingdom a great sin? You have done to me things that ought not to be done." ¹⁰And Abim'elech said to Abraham, "What were you thinking of, that you did this thing?" ¹¹Abraham said, "I did it because I thought, There is no fear of God at all in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife. ¹²Besides she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. ¹³And when God caused me to wander from my father's house, I said to her, `This is the kindness you must do me: at every place to which we come, say of me, He is my brother.'" ¹⁴Then Abim'elech took sheep and oxen, and male and female slaves, and gave them to Abraham, and restored Sarah his wife to him. ¹⁵And Abim'elech said, "Behold, my land is before you; dwell where it pleases you." ¹⁶To Sarah he said, "Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; it is your vindication in the eyes of all who are with you; and before every one you are righted." ¹⁷Then Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abim'elech, and also healed his wife and female slaves so that they bore children. ¹⁸For the LORD had closed all the wombs of the house of Abim'elech because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.(RSV)

1 Genesis 20:1-18 ¹Now Abraham moved on from there into the region of the Negev and lived between Kadesh and Shur. For a while he stayed in Gerar, ²and there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, "She is my sister." Then Abimelech king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her.

³But God came to Abimelech in a dream one night and said to him, "You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman."

⁴Now Abimelech had not gone near her, so he said, "Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation? ⁵Did he not say to me, `She is my sister,' and didn't she also say, `He is my brother'? I have done this with a clear conscience and clean hands."

⁶Then God said to him in the dream, "Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her. ⁷Now return the man's wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all yours will die."

⁸Early the next morning Abimelech summoned all his officials, and when he told them all that had happened, they were very much afraid. ⁹Then Abimelech called Abraham in and said, "What have you done to us? How have I wronged you that you have brought such great guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should not be done." ¹⁰And Abimelech asked Abraham, "What was your reason for doing this?"

¹¹Abraham replied, "I said to myself, `There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.' <sup>12</sup>Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not of my mother; and she became my wife. <sup>13</sup>And when God had me wander from my father's household, I said to her, `This is how you can show your love to me: Everywhere we go, say of me, "He is my brother."'"

¹⁴Then Abimelech brought sheep and cattle and male and female slaves and gave them to Abraham, and he returned Sarah his wife to him. ¹⁵And Abimelech said, "My land is before you; live wherever you like."

¹⁶To Sarah he said, "I am giving your brother a thousand shekels of silver. This is to cover the offense against you before all who are with you; you are completely vindicated."

¹⁷Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, his wife and his slave girls so they could have children again, ¹⁸for the LORD had closed up every womb in Abimelech's household because of Abraham's wife Sarah.(NIV)

The men were very scared. ⁹Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, 'What have you done to us? How have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done deeds to me that ought not to be done!' ¹⁰Abimelech said to Abraham, 'What did you see, that you have done this thing?'

¹¹Abraham said, 'Because I thought, 'Surely the fear of God is not in this place. They will kill me for my wife's sake.' ¹²Moreover she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. ¹³It happened, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said to her, 'This is your kindness which you shall show to me. Everywhere that we go, say of me, 'He is my brother.'''

¹⁴Abimelech took sheep and oxen, men-servants and women-servants, and gave them to Abraham, and restored Sarah, his wife to him. ¹⁵Abimelech said, 'Behold, my land is before you. Dwell where it pleases you.' ¹⁶To Sarah he said, 'Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver. Behold, it is for you a covering of the eyes to all that are with you. In front of all you are vindicated.'

¹⁷Abraham prayed to God. God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maid-servants, and they bore children. ¹⁸For Yahweh had closed up tight all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.(WEB)

⁴Now Abimelech had not come near her. He said, 'Lord, will you kill even a righteous nation? ⁵Didn't he tell me, 'She is my sister?' She, even she herself, said, 'He is my brother.' In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands have I done this.'

⁶God said to him in the dream, 'Yes, I know that in the integrity of your heart you have done this, and I also withheld you from sinning against me. Therefore I didn't allow you to touch her. ⁷Now therefore, restore the man's wife. For he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you will live. If you don't restore her, know for sure that you will die, you, and all who are yours.'

⁸Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ear. The men were very scared. ⁹Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, 'What have you done to us? How have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done deeds to me that ought not to be done!' ¹⁰Abimelech said to Abraham, 'What did you see, that you have done this thing?'

¹¹Abraham said, 'Because I thought, 'Surely the fear of God is not in this place. They will kill me for my wife's sake.' ¹²Besides, she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. ¹³It happened, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said to her, 'This is your kindness which you shall show to me. Everywhere that we go, say of me, 'He is my brother.'''

¹⁴Abimelech took sheep and cattle, male servants and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and restored Sarah, his wife, to him. ¹⁵Abimelech said, 'Behold, my land is before you. Dwell where it pleases you.' ¹⁶To Sarah he said, 'Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver. Behold, it is for you a covering of the eyes to all that are with you. In front of all you are vindicated.'

¹⁷Abraham prayed to God. God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his female servants, and they bore children. ¹⁸For the LORD had closed up tight all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.(WEB/HNV)

1 Genesis 20:1-18 ¹AND Abraham journeyed from there toward the south country, and settled between Rakim and Gadar, and Abraham resided temporarily in Gadar. ²And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister; and Abimeleck king of Gadar sent and took Sarah. ³But God came to Abimeleck in a dream by night and said to him, Look, you will die on account of the woman whom you have taken; for she is another man's wife. ⁴But Abimeleck had not touched her; and he said, Oh Lord, will you slay an innocent people? ⁵Look, he said, She is my sister; and she herself also said, He is my brother; in the innocence of my heart and purity of my hands I have done this. ⁶And God said to him in a dream, Yes, I know that you have done this in the innocence of your heart; for I also restrained you from sinning against me; therefore I did not permit you to touch her. ⁷Now therefore restore the man's wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you will live; but if you do not restore her, then know that you will surely die, you, and all your family.

⁸Therefore, Abimeleck rose early in the morning and called all of his servants and told them all these words; and the men were exceedingly afraid. ⁹Then Abimeleck called Abraham and said to him, What have I done to you? What crime have I committed against you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom such a great sin? You have done to me things that ought not to be done. ¹⁰And Abimeleck said to Abraham, What induced you to do this thing? ¹¹And Abraham said, Because I thought, perhaps there is no fear of God in this country; and they will slay me for my wife's sake. ¹²Yet she is truly my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. ¹³And it came to pass when God brought me forth out of my father's house, I said to her, This is the favor which you will do to me; at every place where we will go, say of me, He is my brother.

¹⁴And Abimeleck took sheep and oxen and male and female servants and gave them to Abraham and restored to him Sarah his wife. ¹⁵Then Abimeleck said to Abraham, Look, my land is before you; live wherever you please. ¹⁶And to Sarah he said, Look, I have given 1,000 pieces of silver to your brother; look, it is given to you, because you have been humbled in the eyes of my people, and because of the other things for which I have reprimanded you. ¹⁷So Abraham prayed to God and God healed Abimeleck and his wife and his female servants, and they bore children. ¹⁸For Yahvah had fast closed up the wombs of all women in the household of Abimeleck because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.
