(WLC) 1 Genesis 50:26 1 Genesis 50:26 26So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.(KJV) 1 Genesis 50:26 26So Joseph died, being 110 years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.(KJV/NC) 1 Genesis 50:26 26So Joseph died, being a hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.(ASV) 1 Genesis 50:26 26So Joseph died, being a hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him and put him in a coffin in Egypt. (RSV) 2 Exodus 1:6 6Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, (NIV) 2 Exodus 1:6 6Joseph died, as did all his brothers, and all that generation. (WEB) 2 Exodus 1:6 6Joseph died, as did all his brothers, and all that generation. (WEB/HNV) 2 Exodus 1:6 6And Joseph died, and all his brothers, and all that generation. (BRB) As with all the books in the Bible there are multiple linkages between Genesis and Exodus. The most obvious linkage is normally that occuring in the immediate context shared between the books. When surveying the end of Genesis and beginning of Exodus the death of Joseph is the obvious linkage between the books. Genesis tells the short story of Joseph's death and Exodus restates the event before moving several centuries forward in time to focus on Moses. It's interesting to note what Joseph told his brothers before passing away. (WLC) 1 Genesis 50:24 1 Genesis 50:24-25 24And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 25And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence. (KJV) 1 Genesis 50:24-25 24And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 25And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence. (KJV/NC) 1 Genesis 50:24-25 24And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die; but God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 25And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence. (ASV) 1 Genesis 50:24-25 24And Joseph said to his brothers, I am dying; and God will surely remember you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 25And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely remember you, and you shall carry up my bones from here with you. (LAM) 1 Genesis 50:24-25 24And Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die; but God will visit you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob." 25Then Joseph took an oath of the sons of Israel, saying, "God will visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here." (RSV) 1 Genesis 50:24-25 24Then Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob." 25And Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath and said, "God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place."(NIV) 1 Genesis 50:24-25 24Joseph said to his brothers, 'I am dying, but God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.' 25Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, 'God will surely visit you, and youP shall carry up my bones from here.' (WEB) 1 Genesis 50:24-25 24Joseph said to his brothers, 'I am dying, but God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.' 25Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, 'God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.' (WEB/HNV) 1 Genesis 50:24-25 24And Joseph said to his brothers, I am dying; and God will surely remember you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 25And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely remember you, and you will carry up my bones from here with you. (BRB) Joseph reminded his brothers that some day in the future God would deliver their people from Egypt and they would return to the land of Abraham. Joseph then made them swear to carry his bones out of Egypt when that time came. Joseph's reminder that God would one day bring Israel out of Egypt is a perfect intro to the events of Exodus. And of course, when that time came, the Israelites brought Joseph's bones with them. (WLC) 2 Exodus 13:19 2 Exodus 13:19 19And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you.(KJV) 2 Exodus 13:19 19And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you.(KJV/NC) 2 Exodus 13:19 19And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you. (ASV) 2 Exodus 13:19 19And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him; for he had solemnly made the children of Israel to swear, saying, God will surely remember you; and you must carry up my bones from here with you. (LAM) 2 Exodus 13:19 19And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him; for Joseph had solemnly sworn the people of Israel, saying, "God will visit you; then you must carry my bones with you from here." (RSV) 2 Exodus 13:19 19Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the sons of Israel swear an oath. He had said, "God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place."(NIV) 2 Exodus 13:19 19Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the children of Israel swear, saying, 'God will surely visit you, and youP shall carry up my bones away from here with you.' (WEB) 2 Exodus 13:19 19Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the children of Israel swear, saying, 'God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones away from here with you.' (WEB/HNV) 2 Exodus 13:19 19And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him; for he had solemnly made the children of Israel to swear, saying, God will surely remember you; and you must carry up my bones from here with you. (BRB) Time in EgyptThere are other linkages shared between Genesis and Exodus. In one of Abraham's encounters with Yahvah he was told that his descendants would be slaves in another country for 400 years. (WLC) 1 Genesis 15:13 1 Genesis 15:13-14 13And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; 14And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. (KJV) 1 Genesis 15:13-14 13And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them 400 years; 14And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. (KJV/NC) 1 Genesis 15:13-14 13And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be sojourners in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; 14and also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. (ASV) 1 Genesis 15:13-14 13And the LORD said to Abram, Know of a surety that your descendants shall be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and shall be in servitude: and they shall afflict them for four hundred years; 14But I will judge the nation which they shall serve; and afterward they shall come out with great wealth. (LAM) 1 Genesis 15:13-14 13Then the LORD said to Abram, "Know of a surety that your descendants will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs, and will be slaves there, and they will be oppressed for four hundred years; 14but I will bring judgment on the nation which they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. (RSV) 1 Genesis 15:13-14 13Then the LORD said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated 400 years. 14But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. (NIV) 1 Genesis 15:13-14 13He said to Abram, 'Know for sure that your seed will live as foreigners in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them. They will afflict them four hundred years. 14I will also judge that nation, whom they will serve. Afterward they will come out with great substance. (WEB) 1 Genesis 15:13-14 13He said to Abram, 'Know for sure that your seed will live as foreigners in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them. They will afflict them four hundred years. 14I will also judge that nation, whom they will serve. Afterward they will come out with great wealth, (WEB/HNV) 1 Genesis 15:13-14 13And Yahvah said to Abram, Know for sure that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will be in servitude: and will be afflicted for 400 years; 14But I will judge the nation which they will serve; and afterward they will come out with great wealth. (BRB) The 400 years of servitude is confirmed with a reference in Exodus to 430 total years spent in Egypt. (WLC) 2 Exodus 12:40 2 Exodus 12:40-41 40Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years. 41And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt. (KJV) 2 Exodus 12:40-41 40Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was 430 years. 41And it came to pass at the end of the 430 years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt. (KJV/NC) 2 Exodus 12:40-41 40Now the time that the children of Israel dwelt in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years. 41And it came to pass at the end of four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of Jehovah went out from the land of Egypt. (ASV) 2 Exodus 12:40-41 40Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years. 41And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years. on this very day that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt. (LAM) 2 Exodus 12:40-41 40The time that the people of Israel dwelt in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years. 41And at the end of four hundred and thirty years, on that very day, all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt. (RSV) 2 Exodus 12:40-41 40Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt was 430 years. 41At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the LORD's divisions left Egypt. (NIV) 2 Exodus 12:40-41 40Now the time that the children of Israel lived in Egypt was four hundred thirty years. 41It happened at the end of four hundred thirty years, even the same day it happened, that all the armies of Yahweh went out from the land of Egypt. (WEB) 2 Exodus 12:40-41 40Now the time that the children of Israel lived in Egypt was four hundred thirty years. 41It happened at the end of four hundred thirty years, even the same day it happened, that all the armies of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt. (WEB/HNV) 2 Exodus 12:40-41 40Now the temporary residence of the children of Israel, who lived in Egypt, was 430 years. 41And it came to pass at the end of the 430 years, on this very day, that all the hosts of Yahvah went out from the land of Egypt. (BRB) The difference in time of 30 years represents the time Israel spent in Egypt before being subjected to slavery. 30 years living in Egypt plus 400 years as slaves in Egypt equals 430 total years in Egypt. The time in Egypt is a linkage between Genesis and Exodus because the crisis of being in Egypt begins in Genesis and the resolution comes by leaving Egypt in Exodus. Promise of LandThe promise given to Abraham about his descendants receiving the land of Canaan is also important to the basic storyline of Exodus. Here is one occurence of the land promise to Abraham. (WLC) 1 Genesis 15:18 1 Genesis 15:18-21 18In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: 19The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, 20And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, 21And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.(KJV) 1 Genesis 15:18-21 18In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: 19The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, 20And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, 21And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.(KJV/NC) 1 Genesis 15:18-21 18In that day Jehovah made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: 19the Kenite, and the Kenizzite, and the Kadmonite, 20and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Rephaim, 21and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Girgashite, and the Jebusite.(ASV) 1 Genesis 15:18-21 18On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, To your descendants have I given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates: 19The land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, 20The Hittites, the Perizzites, the Giants, 21The Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites. (LAM) 1 Genesis 15:18-21 18On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphra'tes, 19the land of the Ken'ites, the Ken'izzites, the Kad'monites, 20the Hittites, the Per'izzites, the Reph'aim, 21the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Gir'gashites and the Jeb'usites."(RSV) 1 Genesis 15:18-21 18On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates -- 19the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, 21Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites."(NIV) 1 Genesis 15:18-21 18In that day Yahweh made a covenant with Abram, saying, 'To your seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates: 19the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, 20the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.'(WEB) 1 Genesis 15:18-21 18In that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, 'To your seed I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates: 19the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, 20the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.'(WEB/HNV) 1 Genesis 15:18-21 18On that day Yahvah made a contract with Abram, saying, To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates: 19The land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, 20The Hittites, the Perizzites, the Giants, 21The Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites. (BRB) The importance of the covenant with Abraham is obvious when reading through the book of Exodus. Often the stated reason for God's delivering the Israelites is in fulfillment of his promise and/or covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Take for example the time Moses was told by Yahvah to assemble the elders of Israel. (WLC) 2 Exodus 3:16 2 Exodus 3:16-17 16Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and say unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt: 17And I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, unto a land flowing with milk and honey. (KJV) 2 Exodus 3:16-17 16Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and say unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt: 17And I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, unto a land flowing with milk and honey. (KJV/NC) 2 Exodus 3:16-17 16Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and say unto them, Jehovah, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, hath appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt: 17and I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, unto a land flowing with milk and honey. (ASV) 2 Exodus 3:16-17 16¶ Go and gather the elders of Israel together, and say to them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared to me, saying, I have surely remembered you and seen that which is done to you in Egypt; 17And I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of the Egyptians to the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey. (BRB) When looking at these stories it's clear that God sees into the future. He promised land to Abraham's descendants, but explained they would be slaves in another country for 400 years. He then brought them out of Egypt in the book of Exodus in fulfillment of his promises to Abraham and the Israelites brought Joseph's bones as he had requested before his death. |
